Pycnocline

The chemocline ( from Greek: πυκνός Pyknos = crowded ) is a transition between layers of water of different densities in lakes and seas. The difference in density can be achieved by different temperatures ( thermocline ) in the temperature stratification, by various salinities (halo Kline ), or by different amounts of dissolved solids (chemo Kline ), such as caused, for example, in meromictic lakes.
