Pyrex

Pyrex is a brand name for a borosilicate glass the American firm Corning. Because of its low expansion coefficient and its chemical resistance, it is used to housewares and laboratory equipment and for mirrors in reflecting telescopes.

In the English-speaking world, the brand name is used as a generic term synonymous with borosilicate glass. This is analogous to " ILMABOR " of " TGI ", " Jena glass ", or "Duran " in the German language area. However, even kitchen appliances from soda-lime glass are so named in the United States.

Under Eugene C. Sullivan was at Corning in the early 20th century, a borosilicate glass called NONEX or CNX ( corning glass nonexpansion ) developed. Since it contained quantities of lead, it was not suitable for the food sector. As a result, we have developed a formulation without lead of Sullivan and William C. Taylor, which was introduced in 1915 under the name Pyrex. Pyrex was one of the main products during the world economic crisis for Corning.

Before the First World War, the Jena glass works had a virtual monopoly for laboratory glassware. The development of Corning was therefore judged to be essential to the war.
