Pyun Hye-Young

Pyun Hye -Young (born 1972 in Seoul) is a South Korean writer.

Life

Pyun Hye -Young was born in 1972 in Seoul. She studied creative writing at Seoul Institute of the Arts and graduated from the Hanyang University for further studies in Korean language and literature. Her literary debut was Pyun Hye -Young in 2000 when she won the short story Yisǔltǒlgi ( 이슬 털기 ) at the Spring Literary Competition of Seoul Sinmun newspaper. The story is about a woman who was impregnated by her lover and then leave, they cursed him for that and wish him death, eventually occurs. Pyun Hye- Young's first short story collection Aoi Garden is also filled with bizarre, cruel, threatening and subversive images, such as the description of a slit cat and their innards, the smell of a mountain full of rotting garbage or an apartment complex, where broken an epidemic is. In her second collection direction enclosures ( 사육장 쪽으로 ) find themselves less gruesome tales, but as nightmares from real life seem. A house that is next to a swamp and teeming with mice and vermin; a family that has to bring her son to the hospital because he was bitten by a dog; a man has, the wolf fur has attracted one and is held for a real free-roaming wolf and a man who lost important documents along with his glasses.

With her special style of grotesque and ugly images Pyun Hye -Young creates an irrational world of chaos and confusion, and so stands out from the usual Korean literary world. Critics therefore describe their work as subversive.
