Qabala District

Qəbələ is a rayon in Azerbaijan. The capital of the district is the city Qəbələ.

Geography

The district has an area of 1548 km ². The landscape is part of the Greater Caucasus and bordered to the north Dagestan. A large part of the district is forested. Through the rayon, the rivers flow Garachay and Gochalanchay.

Population

In Rayon live about 93,800 people. These are spread over 62 settlements.

Economy

The region is dominated by agriculture. There are bred mainly sheep and silkworms as well as grain, tobacco, wine, nuts and apples grown. There are also food-processing industries such as wineries and tobacco processing plants.

Archaeological Sites

In the neighborhood there are a number of tombs, mausoleums and old cemeteries. Moreover, in the rayon are the ruins of the city of Gabala Chukur from the 4th century BC The city was discovered in 1959 and was probably a capital of the state Albania. Nearby, at Boyuk Amili, are the remains of an Albanian church.
