Qaen

Qāen (Persian قائن; spellings Qayen, Ghayen, Ghajen or Ghaen ) is a city in the province of South Khorasan in Iran. The city is mainly known for its saffron and is therefore also known as the city of saffron. The produced here spice is characterized by the unique aroma and the intensity of its color. In addition to the saffron, the city produces, inter alia, also carpets.

Surrounded by a mud wall city has a very checkered history. In its present form it originated in the 15th century and then was under the rule of different tribes and nations. During the 16th century it was occupied by the Uzbeks and came around 1600 under the control of Shah Abbas I in the 18th century, the city fell to Afghans.

The city's attractions include the tomb Bozorgmehr Qainis, which is located 5 km south of the city.

In the Ardakul Earthquake on 10 May 1997 on 2, 400 people died in the city and its surroundings
