Quadrangular castle

A castle castle is a castle form, which gained a foothold in the Mediterranean from the time of the Crusades, but no later than with the introduction of firearms, so in the late period of castle building in Europe. It describes the modern form of the fort.

In a castle fortress, the building on the inside of mostly square or uniform wall train are arranged. The outer walls of the building are therefore strong and interrupted only by the most necessary wall openings. Most can be found on the walls battlements, which are increasingly covered with the use of firearms.

The corners of the quadrangle of buildings can be reinforced by towers. Often there is an additional Mauerzug front of the building complex at the corners round bastions allowed a brushing of the sides.

Depending on the location of the fort there is a castle moat or a moat on the side of the door or the most vulnerable side of the castle.

The thus resulting shape of the castle can be seen as precursors of the Renaissance castle.
