Quadrille (card game)

The Quadrille is a historic card game for four people. Quadrille was originally merely an adaptation of L' Hombre for four ( active ) players, but surpassed in England around 1725 the older L' Hombre popularity.

After Edmond Hoyle had in 1741 published a treatise on whist, he let in the following years further Short Treatises on Piquet, Brag, chess, backgammon and Quadrille ( 1745) followed, and so established his name as an authority in matters of games and their rules.

Quadrille enjoyed huge popularity in the 18th century, but has been almost completely replaced in the late 18th century by whist. The quadrille influenced very sustainable developing further, still popular games, such as solo whist and the Tarot game, especially in the dominant variant, the king calls, the close relationship to the quadrille reveals.

The name Quadrille is of French origin and is derived as the dance (see Quadrille ( Dance ) ) on Italian or Spanish quadriglio cuadrilla from the Latin square ( German: four ) from.
