Quadrivium

The Quadrivium ( Latin for " four -way " ) included the further four of the septem artes liberales - the " seven liberal arts " ( in Antiquity and the Middle Ages) - as a continuation of the language subjects of the trivium and consisted of the - also throughout Latin taught - mathematical subjects:

  • Arithmetic
  • Geometry (including geography and natural history )
  • Music ( music theory )
  • Astronomy (then also Astrology )

Together with the subjects of the trivium, they formed the subject matter of the " Faculties of Arts " ( in modern terminology: Philosophical Faculties ) of the medieval university. An impression of the specific content of these subjects can be eg win by the ( around 630 AD. closed ) Encyclopedia of Isidore of Seville.
