History

In December 1965, began to build the San Diego stage in the Brutalist style. The stadium had a capacity of 50,000 spectators at the opening. In 1980 the stadium was renamed Jack Murphy Stadium in honor of the late sports journalist who had initiated the efforts for the stadium. In several stages, the capacity was increased to Super Bowl XXXII in 1998 to more than 71,000 seats. 1997, the company Qualcomm acquired the naming rights in 2017 for $ 18 million.

Events

The stadium is currently used mostly for football games. Between 1969 and 2003 also played the baseball team San Diego Padres at Qualcomm Stadium. In addition, football tournaments were held, including the CONCACAF Gold Cup and the U.S. Cup. The Mexican national football team already played several friendly matches here.

The Jehovah's Witnesses hold their congresses regularly in Qualcomm Stadium, Billy Graham has held a number of meetings here.

Future

With the departure of the Padres in 2003 there was some discussion to replace the stadium with a modern pure football stadium. The biggest problem however, is that the city could not finance a new stadium.
