Quanah is a town in Hardeman County in the U.S. state of Texas and also the administrative center ( county seat ) of this county. The place was named after Quanah Parker, the last chief of the Comanche. The astronaut Edward Givens (1930-1967) was born in Quanah.

Geography

The site has an area of 9.0 km ². Quanah is about 300 km from the fifth-largest city in Texas, Fort Worth, removed.

Demography

According to the census of 2000, there were 3,022 people in 1,255 households and 823 families. The population density was 334.3 inhabitants per km ². Ethnically the population was composed of 84.05 % White, 4.96 % African American, 0.40 % Native American, 0.43 % residents from the Pacific Islander, 8.24 % from other origin and 1.92 % from of two or more from Erhnien. 16.48 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race ancestry.

Of the 1,255 households, 29.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 51.8 % were married couples living together, 10.4 % had a female householder with no husband. 34.4 % were non-families, 31.9 % of all households are made up and in 20.2 % of households had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.96.

25.1% of the population were under 18 years old, 7.9 % from 18 to 24, 22.0% from 25 to 44, 22.9% between 45 and 64 and 22.0 % were 65 years or older. The average age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 87.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.20 males.

The median income for a household was $ 26,354, and the median income for a family was $ 29,506. Males had a median income of $ 26,472 versus $ 18,403 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,841. 16.6 % of families and 20.7 % of the population were below the poverty line.
