Quantum satis

The amounts of quantum satis (Latin for " as much as necessary ", " adequate amount " ), short or qs Qs, is mainly used in pharmaceuticals, but also in food law. It means that no maximum level is specified.

Pharmacy

For substances that are marked with this quantity, it is always auxiliary ingredients, never to agents. It is used the minimum necessary for each recipe amount. For example, should a substance be processed dissolved, are gradually added as much solvent as is required for a complete resolution.

Food Law

The abbreviation is also used in food law as a quantitative indication of food additives for which no maximum level is specified. This applies to substances with virtually unlimited compatibility ( such as completely digestible substances). The quantum satis does not mean " any amount ", but is according to § 7 ZZulV repeatedly restricted:

  • To the currently technically required in individual cases amount
  • In compliance with and adherence to the " Good Manufacturing Practice " (GMP ),
  • Insofar as this does not mislead the consumer.
