Quarley Hill

The oval Hill Fort on the 52 meter high Quarley Hill dates from the Iron Age. The two-phase system is located north of Grateley in Hampshire in the hills between the towns of Amesbury and Andover in England.

First one, surrounded by a palisade containment arose. This was later supplemented by a two-meter high wall and a four -meter-deep ditch, with supported embankment ( counterscarp ). The Wall and one of the entrances, located at the south-west and north-east side, remained unfinished. The emergence of this and three other nearby Hill forts and their relationships to each other and to the radial, linear earthworks in their environment were studied by B. Cunliffe.
