Quatremère de Quincy

Antoine Chrysostome Quatremère de Quincy ( born October 21, 1755 in Paris, † December 28, 1849 ) was a French writer, archaeologist and art historian.

Life

Quatremère de Quincy was sentenced in 1796 for alleged involvement in the preparation of a monarchist uprising to death, but later acquitted. In 1797 he was elected to the ( introduced by the Constitution of the Board ), " Council of Five Hundred ", but went into hiding after his participation in a royalist uprising. In 1800 he was appointed General Secretary of the General Council of the department of Seine.

Between 1788 and 1825 he published three volumes on architecture of systematically structured Encyclopédie méthodique, which was moved from Panckoucke.

Quatremère de Quincy was 1816-1839 Secretary of the Académie des Beaux -Arts in 1818, he became professor of archeology at the Bibliothèque nationale. The Bavarian Academy of Sciences in 1810 took him on as a foreign member.

He was the author of numerous articles and books. His main work is considered the book Le Jupiter olympien (Paris 1814) about the Statue of Zeus by Phidias in Olympia.
