Quatzenheim

Quatzenheim is a commune with 833 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Bas- Rhin in the Alsace region. It belongs to the community association Communauté de communes farmland.

Geography

Quatzenheim Located on Route 30 between Departmental D Furdenheim in the southwest and Wiwersheim in the Northeast, 14 kilometers north- west of Strasbourg. The Souffel flows through the municipal area.

History

Quatzenheim lies on the old Roman road that led from Strasbourg to Saverne and is still partly used as road department.

In 1674 the Castle of Quatzenheim during the Dutch War ( 1672-1679 ) was destroyed as a result of the Battle of Entzheim. In the battle the troops of Henri de La Tour d' Auvergne, vicomte de Turenne met (1611-1675) on the troops of the Holy Roman Empire.

1793 Quatzenheim received the status of a municipality and in 1801 the right to local self-government in the wake of the French Revolution. From 1871 to 1919, the village belonged to Germany.

From the 18th century and until 1940 there was a large Jewish community in Quatzenheim. In 1777 a private house was used as a synagogue. In 1819 it was converted into a synagogue. From 1939-1945 it was deprived of its furniture, until 1980, it served nonetheless as a prayer house. In the vicinity of the former synagogue of Quatzenheim a school for Jewish children was built about 1869, which was used until 1928 as a school. Today the building is used as a residence and as a branch of the post office. A further device of the Jewish community was and is the Jewish cemetery on the eastern outskirts of the village, which was created in 1793 and is still used today.
