Quba District (Azerbaijan)

Quba is a rayon in the north of Azerbaijan, on the northeast flank of the Greater Caucasus. Capital of Rajons is the city of Quba. The rayon has an area of 2,610 km ² and 151,000 inhabitants. There are 155 villages and two larger settlements, Gonagkend and Qirmizi Qesebe.

Economy

The region is known for the cultivation of apples, and other fruits are grown. On the mountain slopes sheep are bred, their products are processed in the local industry. In the city of Quba carpets are produced.

Population

In the region of 87,000 Azerbaijanis, 54,000 Lezgins (36%) and 6,000 Jews live ( 4%). It is spoken mainly Azerbaijani and Lezgian. 94% of the population is Muslim.

In Rajon lives also a part of Azerbaijan's Mountain Jews, especially in the community of Qırmızı Qəsəbə ( district administrative center of Rayon Quba ). The inhabitants of the over 2000 meter high village Xınalıq have preserved their named after the place and almost only there Chinalugische spoken language, due to the isolated location - the village is accessible only since 2006 on a street.

History

The area of Quba was one long to state the Shirvanshahs, later it was conquered by the Persian Safavids with these.

After the death of Nadir Shah in 1747 Quba formed under Hussein Ali an independent Khanate, the Khanate of Quba. The Khanate expanded in the second half of the 18th century and became the most powerful in North Azerbaijan. From this period monuments and ruins are still preserved. In 1806 it was annexed by Russia.

Architecture and monuments

In the city of Quba to find the Juma Mosque ( Cuma Məscid ) and the Ardabil Mosque ( Ərdəbil Məscid ) and old bathhouses. In addition, in the region 134 archaeological sites, including the Zoroastrian temple at Xınalıq and the graves of Aghbil from the 16th century.

Furthermore, the waterfalls near Afurja that Pirbanovsha caves and the mountain springs of Bulbalag for tourism to be used.

Famous people

Abbasqulu aga Bakikhanov, a writer, historian and philosopher of the 19th century, and the playwright Sakina Akhundzadeh come from the region.
