Quba

Quba also Guba (Russian Куба / Cuba), is a city in Azerbaijan. It is the capital of the district of Quba. The city is located at about 600 m height on the banks of the river Kudyal.

In the city live about 22,000 inhabitants.

History

Quba originated from the village Kudyal, which was the beginning of the 18th century capital of the khanate of Quba. This was one of the most powerful in the north of Azerbaijan. The Khanate was annexed in 1806 by Russia.

1918 Quba was the scene of a massacre by Armenian fighters Dashnagzoutiun, who acted as representatives of the newly established Soviet power, to the Azerbaijani population. About 4,000 people were killed.

Culture

In the city the fortress Tengialty is from the 16th century. In addition Quba has a large, octagonal Friday Mosque, the Mosque of Sakine - Khanum and the Ardabil Mosque. There is also an old bathroom, which is crowned by two cupolas. In the historical museum of the city was inhabited before the thinker Abbasgulu Bakhihanov. Furthermore, there is an old cemetery in the city, a cinema and a park.

The city has its own university.
