The Googong Reservoir was built in 1979 to ensure the drinking water supply of the two cities. The associated water reservoir collects 124,500 million liters of water from a 873 km ² catchment area. Dam and reservoir are located five kilometers above Queanbeyan and are owned by the federal government. The operation is performed by the ACTEW Corporation, the utility of the Australian Capital Territory.
