Queen Esther Marrow

Queen Esther Marrow ( born February 12, 1941 in Newport News, Virginia) is an American gospel singer and lead singer of the Harlem Gospel Singers.

Life

The name refers to the Persian Queen Esther, an important figure of the Old Testament. Before Queen Esther Marrow age of 19 moved to New York's Harlem district, they came out with the Gospel, especially in the Church of their native community in Newport News contact. For the professional musician, she was only after colleagues in the textile factory where she worked, became aware of her vocal talents. After an audition at the famous jazz musician Duke Ellington hired her the musician as a singer for his Sacred Concerts, in the Grace Cathedral in San Francisco experienced its world premiere in 1965, and at the same time marked the beginning of her professional music career.

This was followed by joint performances with Ella Fitzgerald, Harry Belafonte, BB King, Ray Charles, Thelonious Monk, Chick Corea and Bob Dylan. Marrow won especially during the Civil Right Movements in popularity. She met Martin Luther King and sang along with Mahalia Jackson " We Shall Overcome".

During this time, Marrow was also active in the fields of musical, jazz, film and television. On Broadway, she was in The Wiz, Comin ' Uptown and It's So Nice to Be Civilized, as well as experience in the U.S. touring production of Mahalia Sing, Sing, directed by George Faison. In addition, she took a role in the produced by Berry Gordy film The Last Dragon. 1990 went with the emergence of Truly Blessed for Queen Esther a dream come true: A musical about the life of Mahalia Jackson, which she wrote and produced and in which she played the lead role. The piece arrived in San Francisco, Washington, D.C. and on Broadway in New York for the performance and received three Helen Hayes Awards.

In 1991, she founded the group The Harlem Gospel Singers, who are today successful concerts all over the world. In Europe alone, the group have now seen well over two million people.

Queen Esther Marrow now lives in Amityville.
