Water pollution

About 80 years ago, had the Queen River Record unexplained the overburden of the mines of the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company and the waste water of the city. It is believed that in this way about 100 million tons of mining waste was shipped into the river, which was then introduced into the lower reaches of the King River and so led to the formation of a delta in Macquarie Harbour.

The Mount Lyell Remediation and Research and Demonstration Program, made a few years ago that catch basin for the spoil from the mines were created and thus decreased the waste and sewage discharges into the river. This has now again a rust-brown color and is no longer silver gray as before.

Railway

Along the river runs a part of the route of the old rack railway, which was abandoned in the 1960s and built up again in the meantime and is operated as a West Coast Wilderness Railway for tourists.

South of Queenstown, the settlement Lynch Ford is on the river, where a gold mine and other mines were operated in the first days of the railroad.
