QUEST (Cluster of Excellence)

The Cluster of Excellence QUEST - Centre for Quantum Engineering and Space - Time Research is funded by the Excellence Initiative of the federal and state governments since November 2007. The key research topics of the cluster are the quantum engineering and space-time research. The Cluster of Excellence is interdisciplinary with scientists from the fields of quantum optics, laser physics, solid state physics, gravitational physics, theoretical physics and geodesy, involved are institutes of the Leibniz University of Hanover and several partner institutions. Speaker of the Cluster of Excellence is Wolfgang Ertmer, deputy spokesman Karsten Danzmann.

Research

In cluster quantum effects are explored for the production of new measurement technologies. It is working on new concepts which could be improved by making targeted use of these quantum effects previous measurement accuracies. Examples are stable and precise laser systems, custom-made optical technologies, special forms of light ( squeezed light ) and atomic interferometer. These technologies are used, among other things right in 600 gravitational wave detector GEO for increasing the sensitivity. In addition, the technology is also suitable for use in geodesy projects, such as for future gravity field satellite missions.

The cluster is involved in the development and production of stable and highly accurate (optical ) watches, in particular of transportable clocks for use in space. These clocks are required for applications of precision geodesy, such as for the GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) and for highly accurate measurements of the Earth's gravity field.

The newly developed technologies should be used for measurements, to answer the fundamental questions of theoretical physics of time and space. Specifically, it is among other things the connection between quantum mechanics with gravity, the test of whether fundamental constants are really constant, and to processes involved in the origin of the universe.

Research Building HITEC

The Science Council in 2010 to build a new research building at the Leibniz University Hannover recommended the Hannover Institute of Technology, in short Hitec. In the research building to QUEST scientist basic research, applied research and technology development in the field of quantum physics and geodesy perform together under one roof. The approximately 29.5 million -euro research building is designed for a number of employees from 100 to 120 persons and is to be implemented in a four -year construction period from 2012 to 2015. He is among many in particular planned for laser experiments laboratories three major units include: A free-fall simulator, a fiber draw unit and an atomic fountain.
