QuickTime

7.7 ( Mac OS X ≤ 10.5) 7.7.4 (Windows) (22 May 2013)

QuickTime [ ˌ kwɪk taɪm ] has been developed by the computer company Apple multimedia architecture for Mac OS and Windows. This basically consists of three elements: the Framework, the API and file format. Based applications that build on this architecture, such as the QuickTime Player, QuickTime Broadcaster, or QuickTime Streaming Server. QuickTime is erroneously mostly reduced to the QuickTime Player. It works as the underlying technological base in numerous applications such as Adobe Premiere, Apple Logic, Optibase Media 100, iTunes, Final Cut Pro or Avid video editing programs.

General Information

The QuickTime architecture allows a complete production process ( capture & import, synchronization, Compositing & Effects, compression & export, delivery and playback) perform from beginning to end on a single media platform. These QuickTime has an extensive repertoire of manipulation and interaction with a variety of different media types (audio, video, animation, text, graphics, 3D, VR, SMIL, hyperlinks, streams, skins, and more., And up to version 6.5 and MIDI processing ). This QuickTime is able to run programs in the background or to open Internet pages.

QuickTime is also suitable environment for processing and playback of MPEG -4 files and content, as this ISO standard has been integrated into QuickTime, but also parts of QuickTime (such as the file format ) in the MPEG -4 standard were adopted. In addition, there are various techniques ( SMIL, HTML, Java, JavaScript, etc. ) with which a QuickTime movie (English: movie) can be equipped with ( interactive ) control.

QuickTime is able to distribute video and audio files on websites, as it has compression and streaming properties. To stream there is the QuickTime Streaming Server and the free, open- source version, Darwin Streaming Server for Windows, Linux and Solaris. Both streaming servers support both QuickTime and MPEG -4 content.

The QuickTime Framework can process various other media files such as (AVI, FLC, DV, MPEG, MP3, MIDI, etc. ) next to the QuickTime video format and is by its plug-in system to any media types and files (eg also WMV, WMA, Ogg, etc. ) extensible.. QuickTime can also represent so-called QuickTime VR panoramas. This is a technology developed by Apple technology that makes it possible to simulate a three-dimensional space and link.

Currently, there are QuickTime for Windows not in a 64- bit version. The existing 32 -bit version can indeed install on 64- bit versions of Windows, but there can not be used by 64- bit applications, because 64 -bit programs work consistently with 64-bit and thus no 32 - can call bit QuickTime DLL. Professional 64- bit programs such as 3ds Max, Softimage XSI and Maya currently have to do without QuickTime import and export in 64 bit Windows. Up v2.1.2 QuickTime ran under Windows 3.11 / NT 3.51. The last runs under Windows 98/Me version is 6.5.2, Windows 2000 is supported by v7.1.6.

With QuickTime X, which Apple introduced at WWDC 2009 and released with Mac OS X Snow Leopard on 28 August 2009, the interface of the player was heavily modified and adapted to the operating system. In addition, the support of modern codecs has been improved. Integrates was now also a direct export to YouTube and MobileMe, as well as a screen capture function. There is now no Pro version more, still you can install the latest version of QuickTime 7 Pro in addition.

Container format

The container format of the multimedia architecture QuickTime from Apple usually carries the file extension. Mov or. Qt. Also in use - depending on the features - are still the endings qtvr, qti and QTIF. .. . The data is stored in both sequentially and hierarchically organized data units, called atoms. It may therefore next chronological information and track data, save, structural and hierarchical information and relationships. A special synchronization layer, it is suitable also for streaming.

In the professional film and post-production, it is due to the above-mentioned properties, the usual format for the exchange of media data (video, audio, subtitles, time code, chapter points, etc.).

It also serves as the basis for the ISO standard MPEG -4 file format MP4.

History

QuickTime 1.0 was released on June 25, 1990, initially only for the Macintosh platform. Thus, Apple ushered in the multimedia era. In a size of 156 × 116 pixels now digital video could be played without additional external hardware. The frame rate at that time was approximately 10 images per second. This was a significant advance, especially at that time still worked many Apple users with monochrome screens.

The triumph of QuickTime was performed with the rapid spread of CD -ROM and was at the same time reason for their success: In her multi-media and cross-platform video content could be published thanks to QuickTime.

By the third version of QuickTime was also for IRIX (SGI ) and Solaris ( Sun Microsystems) developed, but never after that. Since then, members of the open source community, various attempts (Quicktime 4 Linux, Open QuickTime, OpenQTJ, etc.) has been made to port the QuickTime framework on Linux.

The International Organization for Standardization decided in 1998, as part of its search for a flexible and open file format as the basis for the file format MPEG -4, for the QuickTime format.

QuickTime is commonly used on the Internet for streaming audio and video sequences.

The older Windows versions of iTunes use QuickTime so that its penetration was up. However, since iTunes 10.5, it uses no more Quicktime. On OS X, QuickTime is part of the operating system.

QuickTime as a professional production platform

QuickTime is used in Mac OS X system-wide platform for multimedia production. This is particularly evident. Programs in Avid Media Composer, Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro and Apple Motion, all based on QuickTime Also, multimedia authoring systems and Audio-/Videoprogramme (Mac and Windows) use partially (such as Adobe Director, Adobe GoLive, Premiere, After Effects ) or exclusively (such as Tribe Works iShell, live per day ) the QuickTime technology.

QuickTime Pro

QuickTime Pro is a paid extension of Apple, which provides the QuickTime player with recording and command line editing, output, and playback functions. In order to unlock this Pro functionality in the free version a registration code is available for purchase from Apple. In the latest version ( QuickTime X), there is only a free version with a few storage options. So Apple has the professional user swept many video producer believes the back in order to devote himself completely to the group of pure consumers.
