Quido Mánes

Quido Manes ( born July 17, 1828 in Prague; † August 5, 1880 in Prague) was a Czech painter.

Life

Quido Manes was born into a family of artists, whose ancestors came from the Netherlands and was the son of Antonín Manes and the younger brother of Josef Manes. He studied from 1838 to 1851 at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts and 1870-71 at B. Vautier in Dusseldorf.

Importance

Quido Manes did not reach the significance of his brother Joseph, but was still in the field of genre painting one of the leading Czech painter. After starting out in the history painting Manes came to the mid-19th century to the genre where he could play to its strengths. Above all, he presented scenes from the petty-bourgeois everyday life of Prague and folk scenes from the Chod region in southwestern Bohemia dar. Very successful were his portraits of children. A together with his brother Josef planned work on the folk costumes of the Czech lands did not materialize.
