Quinisext Council

The ( 2 ) Trullanische Synod ( Trullanum, Quinisext, Penthekte or Penthekton ) was a convened by the Byzantine emperor Justinian II in 691 Church Assembly.

Named after the place of the meeting, the dome of the Imperial Palace ( Trullum ), named Synod, at the 227 bishops, mostly from the East, took part, had the task to deal with issues unanswered in the Second and Third Council of Constantinople Opel had remained. While the central questions of Christian dogmatics, such as the long-disputed Christology, were treated more on the edge, were largely questions of liturgy, church discipline, and the like in the center. But even this was not without controversy, since it concerned traditions that had developed in the Roman Church in a way different than in the Byzantine churches of the East. So it was that the signing of the 102 Canons of the Synod was initially rejected by Pope Sergius I.. Later, the Roman clergy declared that he accept the decisions, unless they are contrary to the true faith and the Roman decrees.

In the Orthodox Synod this area is regarded as the completion of the Second and Third Council of Constantinople Opel. She has the Orthodox Christian practice of sustainable marked than any other council.

Was regulated, among other things:

  • The question of celibacy ( priestly ordination of married men as expressly permitted; priests were forbidden to send away their wives under religious pretext )
  • Divorce and remarriage (second and - after a long Bußfrist - third marriages are permitted as a concession to human weakness exceptionally; fourth marriages but never )
  • The relationship to the Jews ( Christian clergy were forbidden to be treated by Jewish doctors )
  • Return the bid to bishops who had left their bishopric, (residence, which particularly affected the Middle East and the Arab conquest )
  • The Simonieverbot
  • To visit the prohibition on clerics, theaters, horse races
  • The fasting rules (no fasting on Saturdays, no celebration of Mass on weekdays of Lent)
  • The rank of Patriarchate of Constantinople Opel (in second place after Rome)
  • The minimum age for certain ecclesiastical offices
  • The novitiate, the dress and hairstyle of monks
  • The prohibition of double monasteries
  • The prohibition of dice game and the fortune-telling
  • The prohibition of the symbolic representation of Christ as the Lamb of God ( instead it should be represented as a human being )
  • The prohibition of abortion
  • The prohibition of customs in honor of the ancient gods, in particular dances and customs in honor of Dionysus at the Vintage and celtic ( canon 62)

The signatures of the bishops ( and the Emperor ) are an important source for the geography of the Byzantine church of the 7th century. Due to the incursions of the Arabs and Slavs and other circumstances of the time many bishoprics were vacant.
