Quinta Normal

Quinta Normal is a commune in Chile. It is part of Greater Santiago and is centrally located to the west of the historic center adjacent. With 12.4 square kilometers, it is one of the smaller communities of Santiago. The population is 94,000 (estimate of 2008) with a downward trend and with an increasing proportion of older population. The economic activities in the municipality are concentrated in trade and industry.

History

Industry supplanted agriculture

As late as 1850, the area now Quinta Normal a sparsely populated agricultural area, located outside of Santiago. Around the road today Carrascal and Mapocho were a number of farms. In the extension of Calle San Pablo, the path followed, the then combined with Santiago Valparaíso, and there were already more houses.

Following the expansion of the railway network of the goods station Estación Yungay was built in 1888 on the western outskirts of the city near the intersection of today's roads Matucana and Mapocho, which in 1905 was supplemented by a passenger train station. This station was a magnet for new comprehensive industrial settlements on the territory of the present municipality of Quinta Normal. By the time settled, among others, thirteen large farms to.
