Quinto TI

Quinto ( German outdated: Quint on Leventina ) is a municipality in the district of Leventina in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland. To Quinto includes the villages and Ambri Piotta.

Geography

The Village Quinto is just above the valley floor on the left flank of the Valle Leventina 1011 meters. Today, the majority of the population of the municipality Quinto living in villages and Ambri Piotta on the valley floor on the right side of the valley.

On the left side of the valley are located on the sunny terraces nor traversed by the Strada Alta villages Altanca, Ronco ( Quinto ), Deggio, San Martino, Catto and Lurengo, which also belong to the municipality of Quinto. These villages, however, are almost deserted for the most part and are only a few inhabitants, mostly seniors and mountain farmers. During the summer months, also returns in the small hamlets of Quinto on the mountain life back, because the old houses are mainly used as holiday homes. The municipality consists of the villages as well Scruengo and Varenzo that as the village itself Quinto lie on the left bank of the river Ticino.

Traffic

The Gotthard Pass route runs since Roman times through the day municipality of Quinto. Important was the route but only from 1220, thanks to the conquest of the Schöllenenschlucht in the north of the pass.

The Gotthard Railway crosses the area in June 1882. During 1882 yet 9 of 14 trains at the station Ambri -Piotta held today hold no more express trains, and even regional trains only twice per day. The local public transport wraps today from over buses.

At Lago di Cadagno the University of Zurich, the University of Geneva and the Canton Ticino operate a research station.

On the Alp Piora a cheese of the same name is produced.

Sports

Ambri Piotta and at the national level due to their established 1937 ice hockey club HC Ambri -Piotta ( HCAP ) is known, which plays in the National League A. The stadium Pista la Valascia has a capacity of 7,000 spectators.
