Quitman County (Georgia)

The Quitman County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Georgetown.

Geography

The County is located in southwest Georgia, on the border with Alabama and has an area of 417 square kilometers, of which 24 square kilometers of water surface are bordered clockwise to the following counties: Stewart County, Randolph County, and Clay County.

History

Quitman County was formed on December 10, 1858 from parts of Randolph County and Stewart County. It was named after General John A. Quitman, a leader in the Texan - Mexican War, Governor of Mississippi, and an advocate of state rights.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Quitman County 2,598 people in 1,047 households and 755 families. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 52.1 percent white, 46.9 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American and 0.2 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.5 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.5 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1,047 households out of which 26.0 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 50.2 percent were married couples living together, 18.7 percent were single mothers and 27.8 percent were non-families. 24.9 percent of all households and 12.3 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.95 persons.

24.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.2 percent between 18 to 24, 23.6 percent between 25 and 44, 25.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 19.9 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 88.9 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.1 males.

The median income for a household was $ 25,875, and the median income for a family $ 30,691. Males had a median income of $ 23,365, women $ 19,069. The per capita income was $ 14,301. 16.1 percent of families and 21.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
