Qunu

Qunu ( IPA: k u ː nu! ) Is a village in South Africa's Eastern Cape Province.

Geography

Qunu is about 32 kilometers south-west of Mthatha, capital of the former Transkei. The town is located on the National Road N2 between Butterworth and Mthatha. 2001 Qunu had 213 inhabitants.

Nelson Mandela

The former South African president Nelson Mandela was born near Qunu and grew up here. In his book Long Walk to Freedom, Mandela describes the place as the place where he experienced his happiest childhood moments.

After his retirement from politics in 1999, Mandela had a retirement home in Qunu. These included a replica of the last house where Mandela was imprisoned, and a villa. There is also a branch of the Nelson Mandela Museum. After Mandela had lived mainly in Johannesburg after his retirement from politics, he retired on 14 July 2011 after Qunu. On December 15, 2013, was buried here.
