Qutb-ud-Din Aibak

Qutb -ud -Din Aibak († 1210) was the founder of the Sultanate of Delhi and the so-called Slave Dynasty, who reigned there until 1290.

Qutb -ud -Din Aibak was a slave from Turkistan, who had in the service of Mohammed Ghurs in the years after the Second Battle of Tarain major role in the conquest of North India by the Ghurids, where he was employed by Mohammed as his deputy. Mohammed was murdered shortly afterwards ( 1206), whereupon Qutb -ud -Din Aibak for by the Ghurids independently declared and the Delhi Sultanate founded, but not initially appointed to the Sultan. Aibak died after four years of rule from the consequences of an accident playing polo in 1210. Aram Shah was succeeded as Sultan of Delhi, but already in 1211 defeated by Iltutmish and was expelled.
