Quthing District

The district Quthing [! Ut ʰ in] is one of ten districts ( districts ) of the Kingdom of Lesotho in southern Africa.

Geography

The district lies to the south of Lesotho. It is named after a river and a mission station 50 kilometers south of the district capital. This is also called Quthing, but is actually called Moyeni (from the Phuthi; German: "Place of the Wind" ). The size of the district is 2916 km ², its population 120,502 (as of 2006). He thus joins the sparsely populated districts of Lesotho.

The district Quthing located in the south of Lesotho. He hardly has shares in the densely populated lowlands. The majority belongs to the Highlands ( Maloti Mountains ). Through the District of the Senqu flows.

It is bordered on the north by the district of Mohale's Hoek, east to the district Qacha 's Nek and the west and south to the South African province of the Eastern Cape.

In addition to the Basotho who live throughout Lesotho and parts of South Africa, there are in the district Quthing Thembu and Phuthi, isiXhosa or Sephuthi speak.

  • Quthing, also Moyeni, with the hamlets of Upper and Lower Moyeni Moyeni
  • Mount Moorosi, located on the Senqu, named after chief Moorosi, who led the Phuthi to 1879 and here died
  • Masitise, founded about 1870 mission, which was led by the French Protestants DF Ellenberger. He lived there with his family in a house in the rock overhang, which can still be visited today.
