R-60 (missile)

The R-60 is a Soviet air - to-air guided weapon with the NATO designation AA -8 " Aphid ".

Description

The development of the K -60 began in the late 1960s in the design office Molniya. After a development period of just four years, began in 1973 the serial production. In 1974, the first of which were delivered to the Soviet Air Force. Their range is from 0.5 to 10 kilometers.

The unusually small and light IR-guided missile was developed for self-protection from attack aircraft (such as MiG -27, Su -24, Su -25) and helicopters. From fighter planes it is carried only as supplementary armament.

The warhead of the R- 60 contains an explosive charge of a RDX -aluminum mixture, is embedded in a fragmentation casing of depleted uranium. The seeker may under favorable conditions be target from all directions capture (English " all aspect" ).

The guided missile is commonly mounted to a launch rail type APU -60 -1 and wired so as to be discharged from there. If two missiles to be mounted on a Aufhängestation, the APU -60 -2- launch rail suspension used.
