R-73 (missile)

The R -73 ( NATO reporting name: AA -11 " Archer ") is a Soviet short-range IR-guided air - to-air missile of the third generation.

Development

The R -73 has been developed as a successor to the R-60. The development by the manufacturer Wympel (Russian Вымпел ) began in the Soviet Union in the late 1970s. The first units were delivered in mid -1980s to the Soviet Air Force. After more than 20 countries procured the missile.

Technology

The missile was specifically designed to dogfight, where she has enough reserves to engage targets up to 40 km distance. It has a three-dimensional controllable Schubvektordüse. The missile is designed for load factors of up to 50g, while warplanes 9g can hardly exceed because of the limited capacity of the pilot.

The seeker of the R- 73 has a large " field of view " of 75 degrees and can be fired in connection with the Schchel - 4IN - visor on aircraft that are up to 60 ° (R- 73M ) away from the longitudinal axis of the own aircraft. The rocket is admitted in conjunction with the helmet visor of the pilot to move the head to their destination. If the destination in the Ansprechradius of the proximity fuse, the fragmentation warhead is ignited. The warhead of the R- 73 contains an explosive charge of a RDX -aluminum mixture, is embedded in a fragmentation casing of depleted uranium.

It should be the western counterparts (AIM -9L Sidewinder, ASRAAM, BAE, Matra Mica and Matra Magic 2 ) with respect to agility, accuracy and range far superior. In contrast to the Sidewinder they can also be used against targets out of sight of the pilot. The R -73 was up to the introduction of the new version of AIM -9X Sidewinder and the IRIS - T as the world's most powerful air -to-air missile short range.

The guided missile is commonly mounted to a launch rail of the type P-12 -1D and wired so as to be discharged from there.
