R. A. Torrey

Reuben Archer Torrey ( born January 28, 1856 in Hoboken, New Jersey, USA, † October 26, 1928 in Biltmore Forest, North Carolina, USA) was an American revivalist preacher and theologian. He is best known as the editor of the book series " The Fundamentals " and the reference book " Treasury of Scripture Knowledge ".

Torrey was the son of a banker and grew up in the best conditions in a Christian home on. He studied at Yale University, was converted public towards the end of his studies and moved to Yale Divinity School, rather than as planned to become a lawyer. During this time he also began Dwight Lyman Moody influenced by, with his personal evangelism. He continued his studies in Leipzig and Erlangen. Torrey was an excellent student, who was a staunch supporter of higher biblical criticism at the beginning of his studies, but during his studies he came back more and more on conservative Orthodox teachings and then was all his life a staunch opponent of liberalism.

After studying him two parishes were offered, one in a rich church in Brooklyn and one in a weak and poor church in Minneapolis. He chose the poor and made a living community of it.

After graduation, he worked as a pastor in several churches Congregational and took over in addition to these obligations also include the supervision of the Congregational City Mission Society. In 1889 he was appointed to Chicago at age 33 of Moody as the first superintendent of the Evangelical Bible Institute of Chicago (now the Moody Bible Institute ), which he directed until 1908. The success of the Institute is widely attributed to him. His management of the school and its participation in the evangelistic program of the World's Fair in Chicago in 1893 brought him to fame in Christian circles. In Moody's death in 1899 Torrey was generally seen as the " prophet Elisha " who would continue Moody's work.

From 1894 to 1905 he headed next to the Institute and the Chicago Avenue Church (now Moody Memorial Church), whose auditorium with 2200 seats filled up soon. He organized prayer meetings throughout the city, formed the church members from in evangelism and led the Church in a permanent revival atmosphere. However, it works only on the testimony of Scripture, which he believed unconditionally, and turned no emotional resources to.
