Rab (town)

Rab ( Italian Arbe ) is a city on the Croatian island of Rab in the Adriatic. It belongs to the County of Primorje- Gorski Kotar.

The located on the west coast of the island port city of Rab existed since pre-Christian times. The town has 437 inhabitants ( 2011 census ) and is located on the narrow peninsula between the bay Sv. Euphemia and the port of Rab

History

The old town center has existed for more than 2000 years. As the first city of the Roman Dalmatia, she was given the honor, the coveted FELIX ( Eng.: "happy" ) to get.

The Roman emperor Octavian Augustus declared the village to the Municipality and gave her independence. First settlements found in the year 10 BC instead.

Twinning

Rab is twinned with the German town of King Brunn (approx. 27,000 inhabitants) south of Augsburg. There are also partnerships with Sežana in Slovenia and the City of San Marino.

According to legend Marino, a stonemason from the island of Rab is said to have founded in 301 San Marino, one of the oldest republics in Europe.

The patron saint of the city and the island of Rab is the Saint Christopher, whose skull is preserved as a holy relic on the island of Rab. In his honor every year on the day of the Hl.Christophorus (July 27 ) Games of the Knights on the island instead.
