Rabbi Tarfon

Rabbi Tarfon (variant: Tarphon; Hebrew: רבי טרפון, not the same as mentioned for Justin Martyr Tryphon, in Jerome on Isa 8:11 Telphon ) was a Jewish scholar of antiquity, and belonged to the so-called second generation of the Tannaim (ca. 90-130 AD).

He was a fellow Akiba, Pharisees from a priestly family, native to Lydda, teacher of Yehudah ben Ilai.

Rabbi Tarfon emphasized the importance of the objective Faktums before the merely subjective intention and decided always in favor of priestly interests.

Attributed to him, among other things, the beautiful saying: " No, it 's up to you to complete the work, but you're not free to desist from it " ( Abot 2, 21 ).
