Race of Champions (Brands Hatch)

Under the name of Race of Champions have been from 1965 to 1979 and again in 1983 held car races that were advertised by the regulations of the formula 1. They did not count as runs of the Formula 1 World Championship ( in English usage: Non- Championship races ). The event took place in each of the Brands Hatch Circuit in the English county of Kent. The first winner was Mike Spence, the last Keke Rosberg. Jackie Stewart and James Hunt won two races each.

Genesis

Already in the 1950s, found in the UK in addition to the rounds of the Formula 1 World Championship, the Grand Prix of Great Britain, annually more other races instead, which were held according to Formula 1 regulations arias, but did not count for the World Cup. These included races such as the Gold Cup (Formula 1) at Oulton Park and the BRDC International Trophy at Silverstone. In 1965, with the Race of Champions, add another cup -free race. It was the first Formula 1 race of the year on a European track. For the teams, but especially for the designers, it was a welcome opportunity to undergo a practical test six weeks before the first European World Cup run their race cars.

In most years, the race for Formula 1 cars was advertised. 1973 and 1974, the organizers extended the starting field for vehicles that were designed according to the rules of the Formula 5000. Peter Gethin won the race in 1973 in such a vehicle. After disagreements with the Formula 1 constructors later events were again limited to Formula 1 cars.
