Rachel Ruysch

Rachel Ruysch (* 1664 in Amsterdam, † August 12, 1750 ibid ) was a Dutch still life painter of the Baroque.

Life

Rachel Ruysch Frederik Ruysch acquired from her father (1638-1731) their first knowledge of botany and painting. He was highly respected professor of anatomy and botany in Amsterdam and had a collection of curiosities, which was bought the Great for his St. Petersburg Kunstkammer in large parts of Tsar Peter. At 15 she began to study with the flower painter Willem van Aelst. At first, she painted flowers and fruits except reptiles and insects. Rachel Ruysch married the portrait painter 1695 Juriaen pool, with whom she had ten children, all of which she raised them himself. As the first woman she was in 1701 with her husband, a member of the painters' guild in The Hague. The Elector Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz in Dusseldorf they committed from 1708 to 1716 as court painter. 1723 she won the 75,000 guilders grand prize of a state lottery in the Northern Netherlands at the age of 59 years.

Due to their popularity and the large picturesque quality achieved their images exceptionally high prices. Despite great demand, she worked a long time on her paintings and remained over the years, their demands on their art faithful. In its creative period of more than 65 years, the earliest dated image from 1681, the last of 1747 comes.

Not only in the Netherlands influenced her style generations of flower painters. At the age of 86 years, she died on 12 August 1750 in Amsterdam.
