Racławice Panorama

The Racławice Panorama (Polish: Panorama Raclawicka ) is the only Polish work of art of its kind in Wroclaw and is one of the most famous sights of the city. It is 15 m × 114 m = 1710 m². The panoramic image shows the victory of the Polish Army on the Russian 1794 in the Battle of Racławice under the leadership of the Polish general Tadeusz Kościuszko.

The picture was published on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the battle after nearly a year of history on June 5, 1894 on the occasion of a national exhibition in Lvov (Lviv ). The ideas was the famous painter Jan Styka Lemberger, who held the lead with the battle-painter Wojciech Kossak. Other contributors were: Teodor Axentowicz, Ludwig Boller, Tadeusz Popiel, Zygmunt Rozwadowski, Michał Sozanski, Włodzimierz Tetmajer and Wincenty Wodzinowski.

The picture has long been a tourist highlight of the city of Lviv. After the Second World War, it was dismantled in 1946 under secrecy taken to Breslau, where it remained in hiding for many years. Since it is a defeat of the Russian army, the authorities feared a deterioration of Soviet- Polish relations. Only after the easing of the political situation, it was taken out. It is issued in a new building, which was built in 1968 according to the plans of the architect Marek Dziekoński and only completed in the 1980s. Construction was delayed due to financial and political reasons, the official opening took place on 14 June 1985, since then counts the panorama of the most visited exhibitions in Poland. The first million was reached in August 1987 and September 2004 the number of visitors rose to six million, including figures such as the Polish Pope John Paul II, Queen Beatrix and the Nobel laureate Czeslaw Milosz.
