The wheel [ ʀa daʊ ː ] is a river, the east of the hamlet of peat house Altenauer springs (also called wheel Born Moor ) to around 800 meters in the Upper Harz in Torfhausmoor. It flows through the body set up by her Radautal, crosses Vienenburg and flows north-east of the village into the Oker.

Geography

In its headwaters on peat house and in the further course in wheel breakage of the wheel flow to numerous high moor trenches. After the junction coming from the left Baste the typical low mountain enters his deeply cut Radautal. At the foot of the wheel waterfall he has already traveled 400 meters and added more streams such as the coming of the right Lohnbach and flowing from left Tiefenbach. When gabbro quarry, the river crosses the highway 4 and in populated areas and a little later in the health resort Bad Harzburg enters the forest house, wheel mountain. In Harzburger urban area the shore is largely fixed with cut stones. In Bündheim opens in Bleichenstraße the bleaching and at the Bahnhofstrasse in the Schlewecke also flowing from left Gläsecke, referred to in the official map as a mill stream.

When Mathilde hut the wheel leaves the settlement area and passes through the left- wheel Anger treatment plant. Below the Guts wheel and the wheel mill she only has to cover about 50 meters to the mouth through an extensive gravel mining area, the ponds are used for fishing. Below the gravel mining area open out the light coming from the left Harlingerode Teufelsbach and subsequently at two springing in wood Radauer streams. The wheel passes through the urban area Vienenburgs and reached shortly before Wiedelah at the east end of the Harly the Oker.

The railway line runs between Brunswick- Harzburg Bad Harzburg and Vienenburg throughout the Valley of the wheel. The Federal Highway 4 runs above Bad Harzburg also about three kilometers in the river valley.

History

In the Middle Ages, the wheel was used for rafts of logs and peat on wooden pallets. The water accumulated on this one with the help of six Flößschleusen. The rafting to material that was previously dumped in the river, drove after opening the locks with the additional surge of water downstream. After the construction of the railway line, the wood was transported by rail and abandoned rafting.

1859 was artificially created at the instigation of Philip Augustus of Amsberg (founder of the ducal Brunswick State Railway ) and the State Commissioner bathing Hermann Dommes to stimulate tourism in the Radau waterfall in Bad Harzburg. These chain you water from the river. An approximately one -kilometer-long, man-made slope trench drains water to a nearly 23 -meter-high rock crash zoom on the western slope of the mountain winter. After the fall of the water is returned to the wheel.

Water

Since 1981, the Harzwasserwerke operate downstream of the waterfall a derivation structure, which drains part of the wheel by the wheel studs the hydroelectric power plant Romkerhalle and from there you can continue to tee off in the Granetalsperre by Oker - Grane studs. The wheel thus provides 9% of the treated drinking water quantity there. Moreover, this construction of the spillway Bad Harzburg serves.

Already at its inception it was equipped with a fish ladder, which, however, was not particularly well suited for brown trout. As part of the renewal of the operating permit an improvement in the situation was encouraged by NLWKN 2006. The fishway was designed then new.

Water quality

The river is in the headwaters of largely natural, but mounted below the waterfall near the shore. This is partly due to the former use of the wheel for rafting and partly to the urban environment Harzburg. In the context of structural improvement measures have already been carried out as the resolution of barrages by Sohlgleiten.

The biological quality is especially valued in the upper reaches of the wheel with the Class I. There mayflies and stoneflies were observed. In the further course, the grade is determined by the various discharges although admittedly poor, but " 19 species from the Lower Saxony Red List since 1986 observed " were.

In the water body data sheet of NLWKN the chemical and the biological state as "good" as well as the ecological condition are judged to be "moderate". The structural quality is rather in the middle. Overall, the body of water wheel is one of the few waters that are associated with the very high priority category " Receive, protection, high or very high colonization potential without apparent hazard".
