The seal script characters shows a person standing upright. Xu Shen, the inventor of the radical system ,大explained in his work Shuowen jiezi as:
" The sky is big, the earth is large, it is man also, and therefore sees大big like a man. "
If大acts as bearers of meaning in compound characters, it often makes a connection with humans or with size. So the sky天is represented by a bar over the people大.
