Radical 37

Radical 37 is "large" with the meaning of one of 31 of the 214 traditional radicals of Chinese writing, which consist of three strokes.

A very rare occurrence spelling variant is夨.

The seal script characters shows a person standing upright. Xu Shen, the inventor of the radical system ,大explained in his work Shuowen jiezi as:

" The sky is big, the earth is large, it is man also, and therefore sees大big like a man. "

If大acts as bearers of meaning in compound characters, it often makes a connection with humans or with size. So the sky天is represented by a bar over the people大.
