Radie Britain

Etchings Britain ( born March 13, 1899 in Silverton, Texas; † 23 May 1994 Los Angeles ) was an American composer.

Britain attended from 1919 to 1921 the American Conservatory in Chicago and then worked as a piano teacher. In the summer of 1922, she received in Dallas organ with Pietro Yon. In 1923 she went to Paris, where she was a pupil of Marcel Dupré organ. After piano lessons with Adele from the ear, she studied composition and music theory at Albert Noelte in Munich ( 1924-1926 ) and Chicago ( 1927-1928 ). Other piano teachers were Leopold Godowsky, Heniot Levy, R. Deane Shure, Joseph Pembaur and Alice Ripper.

From 1930 to 1934 taught at Britain Girvin Institute of Music in Chicago, then at the Chicago Conservatory. From 1940 to 1960 she gave private piano and composition lessons in Hollywood.

Britain has composed numerous works for piano and for chamber music formations, as well as an opera, operetta children, ballets, two symphonies and other orchestral works. Her compositions are mostly tonal and lyrical, in their later works they also experimented with atonal and twelve-tone technique. The program- musical works are mostly inspired by landscapes and subjects from the southwestern United States.

In addition, Britain has written numerous articles for magazines and journals, and for decades was a member of the National League of American Pen Women. She was his second wife (since 1940) with the sculptor Edgardo Simone and his third wife married to the aviation pioneer Theodore Morton (since 1959 ).
