Radio Electronic Token Block

Radio Electronic Token Block (abbreviation: RETB ) is an ATP system, which is used on some single track Plug in Britain. Here are three lines in Scotland and one in Wales.

Operation

RETB works according to the same logical rules as the older token systems. The main difference is that the tokens are here no longer objects, but are exchanged via radio between RETB equipment in the control center and on the trains.

The system provides the following core functions:

  • Issue of the movement authority for a section ( block section ) from the control center to the train
  • Display of the movement authority to the driver
  • Surrendering the movement authority tokens after the train has completed the authorized movement

Technically, it is ensured that for each section never more than a token can be output simultaneously. However, as all token systems can not prevent even RETB unauthorized trips. Therefore comes at the beginning of the block sections today supplement Train Protection and Warning System ( TPWS ) are used.

RETB will regard ETCS out as a class B system.
