Radio Veronica

Radio Veronica is a Dutch radio station.

History

A group of Dutch radio dealer decided on 15 October 1959 in Amsterdam the " Vrije Radio Omroep Nederland " ( VRON ) to set up with the purpose to continue to send listeners and accompanying ad-sponsored radio programs to American and Danish model from the sea. Due to the legal situation in most European countries, such projects just outside the territories ( three-mile zone) could be realized. From the initials of the company, the project name " Veronica " was born.

In order to reach as quickly as possible to potential advertisers, the society member Henk Oswald sent on 15 November, a test program, which he " From the high seas " was the name. In fact, he sent out his office in the heart of Amsterdam. Already on December 9, 1959 bought the offshore radio company for 63,000 guilders ( NLG ) in Emden discarded lightship Borkumriff to have it converted on the spot at the Cassens Shipyard and the radio ship. On April 18, 1960, the radio ship left the port of Emden as a towed convoy under the Panamanian flag to go in international waters off the Dutch coast at Katwijk at anchor.

Radio Veronica opened its transmit mode of the lake on April 21, 1960 to the medium wave frequency 192 meters ( 1562.5 kHz). Due to lack of advertising contracts, the company ran into financial distress. In the same year the brothers Bull, Dirk Jaap Verweij and took over the management of the company and achieved in a very short time a commercial boom for the transmitter. In the period from January 2 to March 22, 1961, the CNBC (Commercial Neutral Broadcasting Company ) sent an additional program of in-flight transmission of the ship.

On November 16, 1964, the former lightship Borkum Riff was replaced as radio ship by the former German herring Norderney. The popularity of the lake Enders under the Dutch population increased. More than 5 million listeners counted the radio control authority of the country in 1961. At that time, the Kingdom had 13.5 million inhabitants. Were played in the early years mainly Dutch pop productions, so the transmitter developed from 1965 onwards more and more a pop music station, but failed non-native productions to pit against " the rest of the world." In the 1960s, the special ambition of the transmitter consisted of, for example, the Beatles or the Rolling Stones to play as one of the first new singles of the great bands. This took the form that these songs were then sent about thirty times a day. To date, used in the Dutch charts the Veronica - invention " Alarmschijf ", which is used as a marker for a favorite preview.

Despite increasing pressure from the other North Sea countries to abolish the sea pirate radio station, Radio Veronica tolerated the Dutch government, after several demonstrations had documented the handset will ( the largest 1973 in The Hague). Following the departure of Verweij brothers from the Veronica Society ( through death and criminal activities ), a new leadership founded with the name " Veronica Omroep Organisatie " ( VOO ). Directors were former Veronica Disc Jockeys Rob Out and Lex Harding. After the amendment of the Dutch Broadcasting Act of (illegal ) offshore radio station Radio Veronica had to adjust its transmit mode on 31 August 1974 ( Final Close Down Day).

1976, the company started as a legal Veronica broadcasting organization in the structure of the Dutch broadcasting system and received airplay on various radio and television stations of the Dutch Publieke Omroep. Especially on the Popwelle Hilversum 3 (later Radio 3 today 3FM ) made Veronica with his Friday shows ( " Full Vrijdag " ) sensation. 1985 reached the VOO the so-called A- status in the Dutch broadcasting system, and is thus one of the major broadcasting organizations, which fill the air time on public waves.

1995 retired from the VOO from the Dutch broadcasting system. The Veronica brand was taken over by the Holland Media Group ( HMG). Under the name Veronica is a commercial TV station and the hitherto hindümpelnde front of commercial medium-wave transmitter "Holland FM " was renamed to " Hit Radio Veronica ". As of 1998, the station has been continued under the name " Veronica FM" and spread on FM. 2000 changed its name to " Yorin FM", as the Veronica Association after a dispute with RTL HMG left ( HMG -controlled ) and took the naming rights.

Veronica had disappeared from 2000 to 2003 by the Dutch airwaves until the Sky Radio Group revived the brand back in 2003 and with "Radio Veronica - de best 80s en 90s hits " on an almost nationwide FM transmitter chain a program with well-known DJs and best new talent spread, and thus maintains the largest legend of the Dutch radio history. The market share of Radio Veronica is currently around 5 percent ( as of 2006). The Veronica - support association ( Vereniging Veronica ) holds a 10% stake in Sky Radio Groep. The Sky Radio Groep - and thus Radio Veronica - is controlled to 85% of the Telegraaf Media Groep.
