The Radiological Society of North America ( RSNA) was founded in 1915 to promote the highest standards of radiology and related sciences in teaching and research and develop. 48,000 radiologists, staff in the radiology departments, technicians and industry representatives are currently members of the RSNA (as of 2012).

The RSNA publishes the journals Radiology and RadioGraphics. Since 1919, she gives up to three gold medals to persons who have made outstanding contributions to the radiological science annually.

According to the organization, which is the organizer, and the " RSNA ", the annual, world 's largest and most important Congress of Radiology in Chicago is named. This always takes place in the week after Thanksgiving, so the last weekend in November, instead of

History

In 1900, the American Roentgen Ray Society ( ARRS ) founded with the objective of promotion and development of radiology. That same year, 150 members from physics, research, development and industry met in New York to exchange scientific knowledge and to present x-ray equipment. The annual conferences of the fast growing company but instead found only on the east coast of the United States, so that members of the Midwestern United States felt ignored.

Thus discussed in 1915, many members on the reconstitution of a radiological society with a central meeting place. Under the name of Western Roentgen Society founded 62 radiologists in the same year a new professional society and held their first meeting in Chicago from. The appeal of this new foundation was already evident during the subsequent Congress in St. Louis in 1916, when 40 new members were gained in two days. 1919, the Western Roentgen Society already has 500 members, issued the first radiological journal and organized the first annual industrial exhibition with 19 exhibitors. Many of the members came no longer just from the Midwest, but also on the east coast of the U.S. and Canada. The success of the Society thus made clear that the designation as Western Roentgen Society no longer held and it was decided to rename in the Radiological Society of North America ( RSNA).

By 1929, the RSNA has developed into one of the most important forums for the exchange of scientific knowledge in the field of radiology in America.

The onset of the Great Depression, however caused even if the radiologist for financial difficulties and almost finished the work of the RSNA. Only through rationalization of own resources and financial arrangements with other radiological societies in the project funding could be worst crisis to date, overcome.

The Second World War saw again for recovery, was only just here the importance of diagnostic imaging for the treatment of wounded soldiers. As part of this, there were significant technological advancements that have been finally established itself in the civilian sector. The importance of the RSNA grew thanks to these developments, so that in the 1950s, radiologists from the southwestern United States and Mexico could be won as members for the first time. The increasing membership questioned the radiological specialist society but with new challenges, as the previous venues offered no more enough space to receive all congress participants. With over 4000 members we therefore drew 1972 in the Palmer House in Chicago around that could offer as a Lone ordinary and affordable exhibition space for the annual congresses. The RSNA should never move again to another city.

With 11,500 participants from all over the world, 183 scientific presentations, 72 presentations, eight scientific exhibitions and an industrial exhibition in an area of 4000 m², the Congress in 1974 to the largest medical meeting in the world was. At this time the RSNA also began construction of its own library for training purposes, which has been extended annually by the results of the congresses.

With this event, the superlatives and the Palmer House was soon overwhelmed and the leaders of the RSNA decided to move to McCormick Place Chicago, where the congress with 12192 visitors took place in November 1975 for the first time and to this day still takes place. By 1988, the number of participants should increase to about 40,000, bringing the RSNA clearly distinguishable from other medical conferences and industry exhibitions. In 1993, the RSNA deepened with the opening of his own learning and continuing education center and the establishment of the Office of Research Development (ORD ) to support the efforts, radiologists and scientists in research and development. The invention of the Internet opened the RSNA new opportunities for information exchange and global communication with other radiologists. During the congress in 1994, it is envisaged the first own homepage and enabled visitors to send pictures of the north wing of the McCormick Place via boarding school in the south wing. In addition, since 1997, all Congress results are posted on the Internet, so that radiologists around the world access to it. In 1996, the brand of over 61,000 convention participants has been reached. The event is thus also become an important economic factor for Chicago and flushed annually more than 100 million U.S. dollars in the urban economy.

With the inauguration of the new 9400 square meter headquarters in Oak Brook ( Illinois) in 1998, which was later expanded to include a conference center for workshops and the establishment of the Research & Education Foundation for the promotion of education and training, the RSNA underlined at the beginning of new millennium, its efforts to extend its educational offer always. In 2007, the Radiological Society of North America 62501 members, with 8792 of them were not from the United States or Canada. During the RSNA conference at McCormick Place Chicago than 230 refresher courses and 120 multi- sessions were offered, as well as presented more than 1,800 scientific presentations and the accompanying industrial exhibition presented 757 exhibitors will present their new developments to almost 50,000 m² of exhibition space.
