Radoald of Benevento

Raduald (also: Radoald, Radwald; † 647 ) was in the years 642-647 Duke of Benevento.

Life

Raduald was born around 600, the son of dux Gisulfs II of Friuli and his wife Romilda. To 610 his father fell in the defense of Friuli against the Avars. Raduald and his brothers Taso, Cacco and Grimoald came with her mother and four sisters in captivity and were deported. On the way to Pannonia, the brothers were able to escape and return to Friuli.

To 614 were Gisulfs II sons Taso and Cacco the dukes of Friuli, murdered by patricius Gregor. Her brothers and Raduald Grimoald, both " almost at a young age " ( iam prope iuvenilem aetatem ), drove it to Arichis I., her former teacher, who received them kindly. Hodgkin assumes that Arichis was the tutor of her father and her uncle Gisulf II Grasulf II.

After the death of the Duke Arichis I. in 641, his son Ajo was I. heir to the throne; but since this was insane, a regency under Ajo brothers Raduald and Grimoald was established. Ajo was 642 at Siponto in trying to sell Slavic marauders, who had landed on the coast. As Raduald of Ajo's death learned raided and he drove the Slavs. Then Raduald was probably with the approval of the Lombard Rothari, Ajo's successor. Raduald who spoke the language of the Slavs, it was possible to move them to withdraw. He himself died only five years after the commencement of his reign in Benevento. His successor his brother Grimoald was determined, which should be king of the Lombards later.
