Radoslav Gospels

The Radoslav Gospel ( Tetra Gospel) (Serbian: Radoslavljevo jevanđelje ) (also known as the Leningrad Serbian Tetra Gospel) in 1429 by Radoslav, a Serbian book illustrator from Dalsa, customized. It contains a number of miniatures, including the representation of the four evangelists. The prayer book is in the Russian National Library in St. Petersburg.

History

The Radoslav Gospel was the priest Bessarion (ca. 1403-1472 ) was commissioned and copied in Serbia in 1429. Of the original 300 leaves have lasted until twelve. According to a note on folio 12r, the book was handed over to the Athos Monastery Agiou Pavlou in the 16th century. During his visit to the monastery in October 1845 Bishop Porfirii Uspenskii ( 1804-1885 ) took the twelve its opinion, the most valuable leaves and gave them into his collection to the Russian National Library. The remaining pages are lost in the monastery today. The miniatures of the Evangelists are performed by Radoslav, who has been immortalized on the leaf with the portrait of St. John with gold. Each of the evangelists is accompanied by a female personification of the Holy Wisdom.

Art Historical Significance

The four miniatures of the Radoslav Gospel resemble one of the major works of fresco painting of the Morava school, the frescoes of the monastery Kalenić to such an extent that a Contribute Radoslav and his assistants is assumed in the painting of the church.
