The Tallinn Town Hall Pharmacy (Estonian Tallinna Raeapteek ) is located on the main square of the Estonian capital Tallinn. She is considered one of Europe's oldest pharmacies, which are still in operation today.

History

The Town Hall Pharmacy is located in Building 11 Town Hall Square ( Town Hall Square 11), directly across from the Tallinn's Town Hall. It is actually three buildings that were joined together. The Ratsapotheke was probably founded in the early 15th century. The first document testifies for the year 1422 already the third owner. The history of the Town Hall Pharmacy is particularly associated with the family Burchart ( Burchard, Burchardt ), which it has operated from 1582 to 1911. The Hungarian Johann Burchart (from) Belavary de Sykava came 1579-1581 from Bratislava to Tallinn. 1582/83 he leased by the City Council the pharmacy.

The firstborn son of each family Burchart was named Johann and the pharmacy inherited. In the pharmacy, then not only drugs but also other specialties were sold: candy, marzipan, pastry, paper, wax, spices, playing cards and later even tobacco. The Burchart family secured the privilege of introducing an annual tax-free 400 liters Cognac from France. It was known that Ratsapotheke for the Tallinn claret, one produced by infusion of spices and sugar-sweetened wine.

After the death of John Burch Arts ( X. ) in 1911 his sister sold the Pharmacy Council to the German Baltic Rudolf Carl Georg Lehbert ( 1858-1928 ), thus ending the 325 -year-old family tradition.

Ratsapotheke today

After the Soviet occupation of Estonia in 1944 the pharmacy was nationalized. After the restoration of Estonian independence in 1991, the historic building was completely renovated and opened in new splendor in 2003. Today, the pharmacy is located on the ground floor.
