Raeren ( [ ra ː rən ] ) is a Belgian frontier town near Aachen, one of the nine municipalities of the German-speaking Community of Belgium. Approximately 50 % of the population are non - Belgians.

Geography

The community Raeren consists of Altgemeinde Raeren Eynatten, the Belgian part of Lichtenbusch Hauset, Berlotte and the village Petergensfeld. Also the 18 km southeast of Raeren located area of ​​the former railway station Lammers village belongs to the municipality Raeren, it is connected only by the route of the Vennbahn with the municipality and is otherwise surrounded by German territory.

History

The place name comes from the Raeren " clear " word and refers to a settlement deep in the Aachen forest kingdom. As a clearing period you take the time to 800 to 1200. It created the districts Raeren and Neudorf. The district of Neudorf is first mentioned in 1241 in a document of Aachen Marienstifts. The first written mention of the name Raeren dates from 1400.

The place was known by the Raerener stoneware, which was produced here was mainly in the 16th and 17th centuries. The best specimens are found in the major international museums. The greatest masters of the Renaissance pottery was Jan Emens Mennicken. The traditional stoneware Raeren has been awarded by the Belgian State to the European Heritage Label. In the castle there is a remarkable Raeren Pottery Museum.

The St. Nicholas parish church, built according to the designs of the Aachen city architect Laurenz Mefferdatis in Baroque style with Romanesque arches, was completed in 1728. By decree of the executive branch of the German-speaking Community of 16 January 1986, it was declared a National Monument.
