Rafael Cadenas

Rafael Cadenas (* 1930 in Barquisimeto) is a Venezuelan poet, essayist and translator.

Cadenas published in 1946 his first volume of poetry, Cantos iniciales. After the military coup of Marcos Pérez Jiménez he went into exile. In 1958 his book on Trinidad Una Isla. After his return to Venezuela appeared in 1960 his most famous work Cuadernos Los del destierro.

In the following years, in addition to several volumes of poetry essayistic writings on literature published. In 1985 he was awarded the Premio Nacional de Literatura. In 1992 he was awarded the Premio Pérez Bonalde. In 2007 he took part in the IV Festival of Latin American poetry in Vienna. In 2009 he was awarded the Mexican Juan Rulfo prize.
