Rafael Díaz-Balart

Lincoln Rafael Díaz- Balart y Gutiérrez ( born January 17, 1926 in Banes, Cuba; † 6 May 2005 Miami) was a Cuban lawyer and politician.

Political activity

During the time of the Batista dictatorship, he was interior minister and majority leader in the House of Representatives.

In May 1955 he gave a speech to the Cuban House of Representatives, in which he spoke out against the amnesty of his former brother- Fidel Castro because of its primary responsibility for the attack on the Moncada Barracks in Santiago de Cuba, in July 1953. In November 1958 Rafael Díaz- Balart was elected senator, but did not take office since January 1, 1959 triumphed the Cuban Revolution and Castro took power.

Rafael Diaz- Balart of La Rosa Blanca ( The "White Rose ") was established in January 1959, the first explicitly standing in opposition to the government Castro Cuban exile organization.

Family

He is the father of the members of the U.S. Congress Lincoln Diaz- Balart and Mario Diaz- Balart, the television journalist Jose Diaz- Balart and Rafael Diaz- Balart of Bankers. He is a brother of the first wife of Fidel Castro, Mirta Díaz Balart -, and the painter Waldo Díaz- Balart.

Rafael Díaz- Balart died on May 6, 2005 at his home in Key Biscayne leukemia. The Library of the Faculty of Law, Florida International University is named after him.
