Rafael Solano

Rafael Solano Sánchez ( born April 10, 1931 in Puerto Plata) is a Dominican composer.

Solano had violin and cello lessons with Manuel Pla Cocco and directed thirteen years old, a choral group in the parish church of his native city. He then studied piano with Vicente Grisolía and Rafael Arzeno and continued his education in 1950 at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música in Mary Siragusa and Pedro Lerma continued.

He was then head of the Gran Orquesta Angelita the radio station La Voz Dominicana and moved from there to the orchestra Antonio Morel. In 1954, he traveled as a pianist with the orchestra Luis Alfonso Larrain to Colombia, where he worked as a conductor of the orchestra of the Embassy Club at the Hotel Embajador two years. Further concert tours took him to Jamaica and the Bahamas.

From 1959 Solano led the television series La Hora de More, in which musicians such as Aníbal de Peña, Fernando Casado, Horacio Pichardo, Nini Caffaro, Julio César Defilló, Aristides Incháustegui, Luchy Vicioso and José Lacay began their careers. In addition, he founded the Festival de la Voz, which was held annually until 1971, and (with Nobel Alfonso Cordero and Mac ) the show del Mediodía. In 1963 he went to New York where he performed with Charlie Fisk at the Hotel Americana. He also studied contemporary music with Hall Overton.

As a composer, Solano El 10 de abril, and Magia En la oscuridad was with titles like Por amor, Por caridad known. They were sung by musicians such as Sonia Silvestre, Lope Balaguer, Fernando Casado, Marco Antonio Muñiz, Vicky Carr, Danny Rivera and Plácido Domingo. He was honored by the Dominican government with the Order de Duarte, Sánchez y Mella, received in 1976 the price of El Gran Dorado, El Soberano 2005 and was from 1982 to 1986 Ambassador of the Dominican Republic to UNESCO in Paris.
